Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is an ideal treatment for musculoskeletal injuries, relieving acute and chronic pain as well as accelerating your recovery.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy entails applying high-pressure waves to an injured area. Initially employed in Urology in the 1980s for treating kidney stones, Shockwave has proven beneficial in orthopedics, chiropractic, physiotherapy, and sports medicine.
A handpiece generates shockwaves, directed onto the injured area, penetrating the musculoskeletal tissues. The impact of shockwave therapy includes neovascularization, commonly known as the formation of new blood flow, reversing chronic inflammation, stimulating collagen, and dissolving calcified fibroblasts.
This therapeutic approach accelerates the body's natural healing response, particularly in tissues that may not have responded to other treatments.
Medical research suggests that shockwave therapy effectively addresses the underlying pathophysiology of tendinopathies, going beyond symptom management. This capability allows us to effectively manage and treat challenging conditions. Examples of injuries that may benefit include:

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
The primary advantage of shockwave therapy lies in its ability to assist individuals who may not have responded to traditional treatments. It expedites and activates the healing process, facilitating a quicker recovery.
Shockwave therapy is recognized for alleviating pain through various mechanisms, such as:
New blood vessel formation, which helps to repair damaged tissue;
Trigger point release;
Reduced inflammation;
Stimulate collagen production; and
Break up calcified fibroblasts.
Before commencing any Shockwave therapy, our Chiropractors conduct a comprehensive assessment of your specific areas of concern. This aims to diagnose your injury(s) and determine the suitability of shockwave treatment for your condition.
The shockwave treatment itself typically lasts between 3 to 10 minutes and may cause mild discomfort, which generally subsides shortly after the session. We recommend a series of four to eight shockwave therapy sessions spaced seven days apart. Some patients notice improvements in their symptoms shortly after treatment, with optimal results often six to eight weeks post-treatment.
In conjunction with Shockwave Treatment, we incorporate traditional chiropractic approaches, including percussive massage therapy, joint mobilization, rehabilitation and exercise guidance, kinesiotaping, and education. Research indicates that the most favourable outcomes occur when Shockwave therapy is combined with targeted exercise prescription.
