Kinesiology Taping
If you've been watching the Commonwealth Games you would have noticed athletes wearing colourful tape, called Kinesiology tape. Commonly known as its brand names (RockTape and K-Tape). Kinesiology tape was developed in the 1970's by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a Japanese chiropractor who wanted a tape that provided support but didn’t limit movement the way traditional athletic tapes do.
Kinesiology tape is made from elastic cotton strips with medical grade adhesive backing. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows it to be worn without binding, constricting, or restricting movement. Kinesiology tape can be worn during exercise, in the shower or even swimming. This application longevity means that the tape can potentially guide your movement while you stay active.
The tape is applied strategically to the body to provide support, lessen pain, reduce swelling, and improve performance.
It can also be used to lift the skin and improve blood flow underneath, reducing swelling and bruising. This is useful after acute injury such as a sprain or strain or after treatment to enhance healing.
