Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic is a medical term that can be translated to ‘coming from the neck’. Cervicogenic Headaches are secondary headaches that are related to a disorder in the vertebrae of your neck. It is a referred pain, meaning the pain is perceived to be felt in the head, although the source of the pain is the neck. Scientific studies show that at least 22-25% of adults suffer from Cervicogenic Headaches, with females being four times more at risk than men.

What are the Symptoms of a Cervicogenic Headache?

Cervicogenic Headaches are said to be triggered by musculoskeletal impairments around the neck accompanied by symptoms such as;

  • Reduced range of motion of the neck.

  • Worsening of headaches with certain neck movements and/or with direct pressure applied to certain areas of the neck.

  • One-sided (unilateral) headache symptoms.

  • Symptoms originating at the base of the skull/upper neck.

  • Possible radiation of symptoms into the head above.

  • Usually associated with neck pain.

Contributing Factors:

There are many factors that may cause patients to experience Cervicogenic Headaches. Your Chiropractor will thoroughly assess and help you to address these factors.

Such factors may include:

  • Poor sitting posture, excessive slouching and rounded shoulders.

  • Poor lifting techniques or poor workplace ergonomics

  • Previous history of whiplash injury

  • Poor sleeping posture or inappropriate mattress/pillow

  • Muscle imbalances

  • Muscle weakness

  • Muscle tightness

  • Neck and upper back stiffness

  • Increase in stress

How to treat and manage Cervicogenic Headaches?

Treatment for Cervicogenic Headaches is multi-faceted and will depend on each individual’s contributing factors. Treatments often will include:

• Postural re-education including exercises, taping and/or bracing

• Exercises to improve flexibility and strengthen the deep neck flexors

• Soft tissue work and trigger point therapy

• Joint mobilisation or manipulation

• Dry needling

• Ergonomic advice

• Recommendation on appropriate bedding and sleeping posture
